Volunteer Opportunities

If you live within travelling distance of Redditch, you have a valuable opportunity to serve your local community in a very practical and yet simple way. Would you please consider volunteering just a few hours of your time to help out in the Christian Word Shop?

We are always on the lookout for responsible and committed people to assist in a variety of ways. As well as the obvious task of staffing the shop on a daily basis, we also need people willing to clean and tidy the shop, to rotate the stock, to check re-order levels for the greetings cards and to create our small window display etc., etc. Some tasks only require a commitment of an hour or two per month, others do require more.

Our aim is for the Shop to be open from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday. Counter staff volunteers normally changeover at 1pm each day and most give either a regular morning or an afternoon, once a week, but the hours can be very flexible. Even just 1 or 2 sessions per month would be useful, but commitment and responsibility are the important factors. The minimum age we are able to accept volunteers is 18 but there is no upper age limit! Be assured that you won’t need any previous shop work experience – the till isn’t an ‘Open All Hours’ model and none of us had done this sort of thing before either!

In the first instance we’ll partner you with an experienced volunteer who will provide training until you’re happy with what your doing. You’ll never be expected to work alone, so if you don’t have someone who will come along with you, we’ll partner you with an existing volunteer to work with. You will also be offered a full refund of your travel expenses to the shop on a monthly basis. We even have a staff discount scheme for you when you’ve finished your training!

Although it’s situated within St Stephen’s Church in the Town Centre, the WordShop is not linked to any particular church or denomination. Volunteer staff come to us from many churches in the area. Our customers are a lovely crowd and the work is pleasant and rewarding. The biggest bonus is working in the knowledge that all profits go to assist young Christians in Redditch and the surrounding area in their walk with Jesus.

No-one working in the Shop is paid for their time or talents. If you’re on JobSeekers Allowance or other benefits we can provide certification that your work in the Shop doesn’t stop you being available for work elsewhere. Several people have found work in the past after starting to work in the Shop.
